Liminal Faces, Quarantine

Ink on cardstock, 8.5x11”

Liminal spaces are transitional or transformative places - where we occupy a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.

In December 2019, I started an abstract portrait series that explores liminal spaces and constant rebirth. The format – recreating the same black portrait outlines with different places connoted by different palettes and moods – offered a sustainable way to draw, and over the course of the pandemic I drew more than I had since I developed chronic hand pain seven years prior. These drawings gave me drawing back and they gave me color.
